Battlefield Visualization Training & Doctrine Development
In support of the US Army, EBR conducted an in-depth cognitive task analysis of battlefield visualization. With a specific focus on stability and counterinsurgency operations, two sets of interviews were conducted with field grade commanders and staff officers returning from battalion and brigade level assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Specific insights gleaned from these interviews were used to identify specific skills needed to (1) frame the various political, military, economic, and social aspects of the operational problem space, (2) synchronize this understanding across levels of command and other agencies, (3) develop relevant measures of operational progress, (4) adapt operations to evolving events and conditions, and (5) identify and exploit emergent opportunities. Findings of this research were subsequently used by the US Army to develop training support materials and future battle command doctrine.
